A catch up..

Sasha

As mentioned in my hurried last post, I'm now in America with my sister. She lives in a small town in southern Connecticut called Mystic. Its on the coast and faces Long Island. Its very picturesque and quaint, in fact, it reminds me a lot of home (the lake district) in some respects. We've spent a lot of the time walking around the area, as my sister has a dog (siberian husky) called Sasha who loves a good 10 mile treck a day. I don't mind walking, but I'm pretty grateful for this exercise at the moment what with it being the festive season and chocolate being far too accessible.
We've also shopped, ate out, and drank a considerable amount!! I'm rather partial to a Baileys as a nightcap now. Its been really nice to spend time with my sister. There's a 6 year age-gap so we've never been really sisterly close, but more friends and I've missed her so much since she moved to the States.

I've bought quite a few things while I've been out here, (I'll do a haul post when I'm home), but my favourite purchase by far is this Betsy Johnson handbag I picked up in TJ Maxx for a bargain price. I just think its so cute and girly, yet a bit wacky too. I've been using it non-stop since I got it.

And tonight, me and my sis ventured out in the snow (yep its snowing, pretty hard too eek), and got a famous Five Guys burger takeout. It was amaaaaazing. I thought all the raving I'd heard would be an exaggeration but it totally wasn't. So many calories, but ahh well, tis the season!!

Anyway, I'm off to New York tomorrow for a few days and NEW YEARS EVE! So excited!!!
I'll post when I'm back, hope all is well.

AWOL in the USA

So I haven't posted in a while, longer than I had planned in fact. On the 14th I flew to the States to spend the festive period with my sister who lives in a small town called Mystic in southern Connecticut. I had brought my macbook with me with all the intentions of keeping up the blogging as regularly as I could. Sadly that was not to be. Had a nightmare with my sister's wifi and only just got it sorted today! I've been lost!

SO, I plan to now do a few catch up posts to cover what I've been up to over the last week or so. Days out and some shopping trips etc. And then on Sunday I'm off to New York for new year! Amazing I know, considering last year I spent new years eve dog sitting ha. So I'll be sure to do a big post on that with lots of pictures.

So yeah. I'm still alive. Apologies for the absence. I also turned 22 since I last blogged (on the 23rd) so that was.. fun. I was really spoilt by my sister, but I don't feel grown up enough to be 22, its strange.

I also had a lovely Christmas, I hope you did too.
Guess that whole rapture thing didn't exactly work out too well, ey?

Review : Superdrug Colour Effects

In this post, I will be reviewing the Superdrug product 'Colour Effects - Wash in, wash out' in shade 8.1 Cool Blonde.

Since the age of around 14 I've dyed my hair many colours, but always found myself coming back to blonde. I generally like it in a cooler shade, as I feel the warmer honey blonde shades just don't suit my skintone.
In order to up-keep this cool blonde tone, and keep brassiness at bay, it is essential to use toners and conditioners quite regularly.

I stand by the use of purple/silver/blue (whatever you want to call them) shampoo products. I wash my hair 3 times a week at most, and tend to use the purple shampoo every wash.
But I also like to use a toner or even semi-permanent colour conditioner to keep on top of my blonde, in between dye-sessions.

In the past, I adored a product from Wella, 'Shaders and Toners -wash in, wash out' which was packaged in a sachet and came in a variety of shades. Mine was 81-Light Ash Blonde and retailed at a pleasing 99p.
This product, along with the purple shampoo kept my hair looking bright, shiny, and most importantly - prevented any brassiness.
Discontinued-
Wella Shaders & Toners
However, I noticed it disappear from the shops earlier this year, and it seems this product was frustratingly discontinued by Wella.

After months of searching for a replacement, I came across a Superdrug's own product. 'Colour Effects'.
(I believe this product has been available for a while now, albeit with different packaging)

This small silver bottle, retailing at £1.29, comes in a range of shades. It is a 'wash in, wash out' product, promising 'conditioning colour'. It even, weirdly, smells the exact same as the Wella product.

It claims to provide 'up to 3 applications', but having used this product 3 times myself, I still have some left. I suppose this would depend on your hair length (mine is currently mid-length). I used a large handful of the dark purple conditioner and worked this into my hair each time.
You use the product like a normal conditioner, adding it to wet hair, and leaving it for 5minutes before rinsing clear.

As far as a 'conditioner' goes, it isn't brilliant. My hair isn't noticabley glossy or soft after use.

However, the colour effect, to use the term literally, is fantastic. It works for me in the exact way the Wella sachet did. Adding a 'cool blonde' hint to my already highlighted hair. Before using the product, I felt my hair was looking a bit dull, but this product really gave it the pick-me-up I was after. It feels brighter and refreshed and really brings out the blonde highlights/shades in my hair. Someone even asked if I had dyed my hair again.

I would definitely recommend this product if you're after the same thing I was. The price isn't going to break the bank, you get a good amount of product for what you pay, and even if you're not a blondie like me - there's a range of colours to choose from!

..now what's the bets this gets discontinued too.. ?

No longer the Grinch..

[ So, originally I planned to do a haul post today, of all the lovely things I've (naughtily) purchased when I should've been Christmas shopping. BUT it seems I left it a little too late in the day. I like to take pictures of stuff like that in natural light (so you can see the products/clothes in their correct colour), and my house in general is severely lacking in that by this time of day.
SO I shall try and remember to take the photos tomorrow morning...]

Instead, I've decided to dedicate today's post to, yeah, Christmas.

I'm usually a right bah humbug around this time. I just always feel like people get farrrr too excited farrrr too early. Its not that I dislike the holiday, I'm a Christmas baby so this season really means 'present tiiiiime' for me. But when people start putting their decorations up weeks and weeks in advance, I just always find myself cringing slightly.

But not this year. I don't know why. Maybe its because I won't actually be spending Christmas at home with my parents this year, or even in this country. I fly out to Connecticut on the 14th of this month to spend the festive period with my big sis who lives out there. Oh.. and we're also spending new year in New York (!!!) Bit of a change considering last year I spent last NYE dog-sitting..

So yeah, this time around I'm loving the lights, the decorations, the Christmassy songs on the radio, the Quality Street's have already been cracked open in my house. Best of all though, the Christmas films.
Don't get me wrong, I loveee Elf. It will never get old or less funny.
But the films that really remind me of the holidays, like from when I was younger too, are..

Its a Wonderful Life
and
Edward Scissorhands
You could argue that the latter isn't strictly a Christmas film, but all the snow and the sad love story just kills me every time. I watch it every Christmas without fail. Adore Tim Burton.
And as for Its a Wonderful Life, if you've never seen this, you're missing out! Its such a beautiful movie and James Stewart was such a great actor.

I'm hoping to do a few nice Christmassy posts while over in America, documenting my birthday (the big 2-2), Christmas day and over the new year in NY! So watch out for those.
I'll leave you with my favourite scene from Its a Wonderful Life.
George, Mary and the Moon.

OOTD & FOTD

As I'm heading out, I thought I'd share my outfit for today, and my makeup.
I picked up this cute dipped hem dress in Primark for £7 the other day. I love the lace appliqued detail on the ribcage. I've paired it with black tights and my old black lace-up boots from Dorothy Perkins. I'll of course be wearing a few more layers, a wooly grey cardigan and jacket (gloves, scarf, hat etc), but thought I'd show it without so you could see the dress.
With the detail on the dress, I felt minimum jewellery was suitable, so have chosen not to wear a necklace. My heart ring  is from Accessorize and my diamond ring was an 18th birthday present. My bracelets are from Primark.

I loveeee me some crosses. Its such a big trend and my jewellery box is full of them. Here I'm wearing my large dark grey cross earrings from Primark. They were only £1! BARGAINUS! And the other cross is actually a cuff earring I bought from RiverIsland a while back.

As for makeup, I'm no makeup artist or expert in anyway. I want to state that here and now. This is my everyday makeup, simple and I like to add a twist with a bright lipstick. I think out of any product, lipstick is my vice. I love how it can totally change your look in a second. Here I'm wearing a beautiful bright red from MUA (shade 13). Its very pigmented and really moisturising on the lips - which is brill. I like how the shade stands out against my pale complexion and blonde hair too.
I kept my eyes simple, eyeshadow-less, with a small line of black liquid eyeliner (L'oreal Superliner)

Other products I used are as follows;

- Mac Studio Fix Fluid (in NC15)
- Max Factor Creme Puff (in 05 Translucent)

- MUA blusher (Shade 1)

- MUA eyebrow pencil (Blonde)

- Maybelline One by One Volume Express Mascara

My hair is au naturale as I left it to dry after a shower last night, the only product I've used is a little Batiste Dry Shampoo Blonde as I'm in desperado need of my roots doing. It works wonders, I'd definitely recommend it!

So that's me. Off to finish my Christmas shop!! Wish me luck, Oxford Street's bound to be packed!

Rewatch : The Virgin Suicides

After a good 5 years, I re-watched the film The Virgin Suicides last night.
If you haven't seen or heard of it, its a 1999 American drama film directed by Sofia Coppola (she also did Lost in Translation).

The film is faithfully based on the novel by Jeffrey Eugenides and stars a very young Kirsten Dunst and Josh Hartnett. The story basically follows events surrounding the suicides of five sisters in an upper-middle class suburb of Detroit during the 1970s.

Its one of my favourite films, and books. If you like films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Heathers, Garden State, Submarine, or anything I guess you could say 'arty and depressing', you'll like it.

Its such a strange and intriguing film, which doesn't give you all the answers but makes you think about adolescence and how fast we grow up these days.

The score was written by French electronic duo Air and its truly beautiful.

I'll leave you with my favourite track - Highschool Lover

Here goes nothing..

For the last 4 or 5 years, I've kept a number of regular blogs.. well, if I'm honest, they were mostly irregular

I'm a born writer, in the sense that writing is all I've ever wanted to do, what I enjoy and what I'm good at. But for some reason, these blogs that I started, just didn't quite work.

Degrees, work and life seemed to get in the way and I found myself seeing them as a chore more than a love.

Which really isn't the point of a blog.

I'm rambling now, but what I wanted to say is I've come to a point in my life where I really need something.

I feel a little lost and direction-less.

And this is why I find myself back on blogger, to write my little heart out and join this beautiful blogging community.

So here it is, welcome if you're reading. This blog will be filled with my thoughts/rants/loves on things fashion, beauty and life related.
Hope you enjoy my posts and please comment!
